"We ask ourselves: Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of the Universe. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of the Universe that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -Marianne Williamson

-Emile Zola

We are all passionate beings by nature.  Unfortunately, some of us have learned to hide it very well or continually douse water on the flame.  Yet, Passion is woven into human DNA.  We always, always have the opportunity to re-ignite the smoldering embers.  Purpose and Passion are dancing partners in life.

To express our  sheer exultation in living  – the unlimited power that comes from following your own unique star – that’s what makes people who shine their Light irresistible to us.

One of the common threads that bind us all is our courage to live.  It is this courage to go one step farther, to search for the other half of ourselves.  We have the courage to ask:  “Why am I here?”  “Isn’t there more?”  “Is this all there is?”

– Abraham-Hicks

There are those among us who are never afraid to love and be who they are from Source - to explore the answers to these questions with their whole Soul; no matter what the cost.  Think:  Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Sister Theresa, Brave Heart, Joan of Arc, Black Elk, Galileo, even Oprah!  Throughout our human history, the epic “stars” who live among us love life with their whole Soul!

Often, we have to overcome fear to discover Purpose.  We have to persevere through layers and layers of experiential pain and rejection to do that.  Despite loneliness. Despite volatile emotions such as  insecurity, rage, and disappointment.  Despite our longings for more money and thingsWe always, always have the opportunity to reframe our lives and reach for hopefulness, positive expectation, belief, empowerment; to feel the passion of life all around us whether by  Well, I have to find a favorite Emerson quote and insert here because it distills the essence of human purpose.  Here it is:

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s response to this question:

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

If we want to capture the incandescence of “who we really are” and “what we’re here to do” we must learn to listen to our Soul, our Source.

Powerful questions serve as a spectacular gateway to the authentic heart.  In Jack Canfield’s wonderful little book KEY to Living the Law of Attraction he offers compelling exercises and questions:

1.  Start by making a list of all the times you can remember in your life that have made you feel the most truly alive and joyful.

2.  Finish this sentence:  THE TIMES I HAVE FELT THE MOST ALIVE AND JOYFUL… Then, looking closely at this list, ask yourself what each of these experiences has in common.  Make note of it.  This common element is an indication of what brings you joy…and what brings you joy is an indication of your life purpose.

3.  What are my natural gifts?

4.  What are my skills and talents?

5.  What are my personal strengths and characteristics?

6.  What do I love to do?

7.  When do I feel the most alive? (One of my favorite questions!)

8.  What am I passionate about?

9.  When do I feel the best about myself?  (Another favorite!)

10.  What have others said that I am really good at?

11.  How do I most enjoy interacting with other people?

12.  What would I change in the world if I could?

Discovering and refining “Purpose” is so critical to successful living. I know respected Thought Leaders who have dedicated their entire business to this art and science.  You may already know their work but here are three of my top picks:

1.  Tim Kelley: Know Your Purpose
2.  Jeffrey Van Dyke:  Lever-Edge.com
3.  Jay Niblick: Inner Metrix & What's Your Genius

Jay’s work introduced me to The DISC Index – which is astoundingly accurate and I recommend it. The Innermetrix DISC Index is a modern interpretation of Dr. William Marston’s behavioral dimensions.  Marston’s research uncovered four quadrants of behavior which help to understand a person’s behavioral preferences.  This Disc Index helps a person understand their behavioral style and how to maximize their potential.

Oh!  We can be so rich with this life.  We need to consciously practice, every day, what I call “Gratitude-Awareness” for this earthly encounter. We are spiritual, electro-magnetic energy beings having a physical experience on a planet so profoundly beautiful or ugly it often brings us to tears.

Metaphorically, each of us is like our planet Earth.  Water, magnetic polarity and energy are our essence. We are spherical in nature with both a light and dark side.  As we rotate through our experiences, we have the ability to offer ourselves within infinite gradations. To one person we may be pure “light.”  To another we may be “dark.”  To ourselves we are often both.  It all depends on where we are on our rotational axis.  There is a magnificent glory in this. Our vibrational frequency and resonance correspond to the circular nature of existence.

-Black Elk

Navigare necesse est, vivere non necesse
-Isak Dinesen

Discovering our “Purpose” is to set sail.  As with life, it is a journey not a destination.  To fulfill our “Purpose” we must believe in ourselves and have the courage to act upon it.  Our courage is often contagious.  We may be aware of this fact or not.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.   We were born to make manifest the glory of the Universe that is within us.  It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone.  And as we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously give people permission to do the same. – Marianne Williamson

Each of us has the capacity to learn to speak from our hearts, for nurturing ourselves and others; for creating a place where people can feel safe, comfortable, peaceful and inspired.  The yin and yang of this Truth is sourced in our ability to survive struggle.  Without struggle we could not appreciate serenity.   Humans are hard-wired in a way that does not allow for full-blown awareness without being tested.  This is what we do in pursuit of “Purpose” – we struggle to convey love, pain, suffering, and triumph.  It takes guts, determination, stamina, focused thinking and perpetual learning.

If we are to understand and discover true “Purpose” we must peel back the layers of our emotional landscape, converse with Source and travel to the core of our passions.  We must listen to our own voice when it cries out, “Oh, I love that!  I want to do that!” Pursuing our Purpose and our Dreams is the ultimate adventure.  There are times this quest gets buried under the layers of simply surviving and this journey can diminish our Spirit.  Sometimes we lock-up our true desires in our hearts as something dangerous and forbidden.  It is our mission to dare that danger; to give ourselves permission and set our desires free.

The thing that matters most is that you consciously reach for a feeling that is improved.  The word for the feeling is not important.  Moving up the Emotional Guidance Scale…is really a process of thinking a thought, any thought, and then consciously evaluating whether the new thought gives you any feeling of relief from where you were before that thought.  So, you think and feel and think and feel, with one intention only:  to feel even the slightest bit of relief.”

POTENTIALITY:  Anything that may be possible.

There is a well of Infinity hidden within each Soul
There you will find an incredible Energy Source
Beyond your broadest imagining
It is Light and Healing
The Force of Nature
The Essence of Love
The Law of Pure Potentiality is based on the understanding that the true essence of “who you are” is pure energetic-based Consciousness.  When we realize that our Inner Being, the Spirit that animates our minds, physical body and actions is one of pure potentiality, we are then in alignment with the electro-magnetic energy that is the fundamental component of everything in our Universe.

Anything is possible and there is unlimited access to the infinite well of Imagination and Creativity within each of us. As a spiritual entity having a physical experience, consider the possibility that one of our primary assignments as a human being is to bring forth, into this physical world, all that we are capable of creating in order to transform our dreams and hopes into physical reality.

The only limits within our existence are those we create for ourselves.   If we recognize and think of ourselves as Soul-Spirit-Beings connected to Source rather than Ego-Personalities contained in and limited by a physical body; then we begin to tap-into the unlimited Source Energy being offered by the Universe.

Ego is the culprit that holds us captive by imposing fear, doubt, uncertainty, lack of confidence, scarcity or any other lower-level emotion.  If we feel limits in our lives, Ego is responsible.  Often these fears and doubts come with false assumptions and motivate us to look for Soul-Spirit-Being sustenance in all the wrong places.

For example, often the Ego will feel fear and desire “things” that will make the fear go away or at least hide.  We are really wishing for freedom from fear.  Yet we “believe” if we just had more money, a new car, prestige and power we would find the relief and freedom we are looking for.  The truth is:  Yes, money, prestige and power offer some measure of temporary relief from the day-to-day challenges of our 21st Century world.  With money we can eat, be safe from the natural elements, maintain our health and participate in social interaction.  But, beware of the illusions.  Money does not “give” freedom or cause “happiness” because the feelings of “freedom” and “happiness” reside within the Soul-Spirit-Being.

Freedom and Happiness are the language of emotion.  Emotions are the guidance system Soul-Spirit-Beings use to negotiate through this physical plane.  Emotions are the larger, more powerful energies that trump little green pieces of paper, motorized transportation, empty mannequin-league-esque parties at a celebrity mansion or any other physical manifestation we trick ourselves into believing are the means to the end of fear, loneliness and desperation.

When we act from Ego – being focused on the external world – we are often seeking approval from others.  Our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and, therefore, our behaviours are always anticipating a response from our environment.  That is why we often feel so much fear about what is going to happen, what other people will say or think, or feel that we need to control certain things.  When we come from a place of fear or lack, we are NOT experiencing Pure Potentiality.

The Course in Miracles is a practice of Spiritual psychotherapy that teaches there are only two primary emotions:  Love and Fear.  Love is of the Spirit.  Fear is of the Ego.  The Ego focuses on the image we have of ourselves and it is usually false.  The false image we have is something that we learned from our parents, teachers, and society as a whole.  The Ego is the one that tells us that our bodies, our jobs, our relationships and what we have is who we are, and it is never enough…We need to release this identification to Ego in order to learn who we really are.  The Ego often keeps us in the mind-set of thinking we are never enough…if we continue to believe that we are not enough, that is what we will create in our reality.

The Ego identifies with what we do in the world, what clothes we wear, what car we drive, what neighborhood we live in, who we are dating or married to, how our children behave, or what our bodies look like.  All of these Ego-identities thrive on control and approval.

Here’s a little, no a BIG, secret:  The emotion always comes before the physical object.  Therefore, we must feel and recognize the absolute power of Emotional Guidance over physical objects and manifestations.  To understand this concept, ask a powerful question:   “What happens to you when the objects disappear – when all the money you want has suddenly disappeared?”  Ego-driven, frustration, fear and terror marches into your life like unwelcome invaders.  Your sense of “freedom” and “happiness” has vanished.  If we dig a bit deeper, we must admit that the “freedom” and “power” we thought were immortal are, in actual fact, conditional – dependent upon our perception that money makes us happy and free.  The “power” only lasts as long as the conditions are there.

Now for the MAGIC!  If we toss-out this misguided perception and instead engage our Soul-Spirit-Being, we tap into a power beyond our broadest imagining.  We tap into the infinite, energetic Source of Light, Healing, Nature (the Universe), and unconditional Love.

Our Soul-Spirit-Being is our true Self and our essence is completely free of outside conditions, circumstances or anything external.  It does not care who is superior or inferior.  It does not compete and compare because it recognizes everyone as unique and energetically inter-connected.  Criticism does not hurt our Soul-Spirit-Being because it operates on a higher plane of existence and understanding.  Our Soul-Spirit-Being does not fear any life circumstance because it does not know fear, it only knows love.

If you allow yourself to get to know and develop a conscious relationship with your Soul-Spirit-Being, you will begin to understand and feel your unique connection to Source.  And, even if this feels awkward at first and you “act as if” you were in partnership with Source, you will be in touch with Pure Potentiality.

You may be asking yourself, “How do I develop this relationship of consciously being in touch with my Soul-Spirit-Being and Source?”

The first part of this answer can be found in simply acknowledging the truth that you are a part of the Universe; a Universe which is composed of energetic-magnetic elements that vibrate at different frequencies and offer unlimited possibility and potential.

Think of yourself as a thread in the tapestry that is the Universe.  This concept is poetically explained in the Rig Veda, an ancient Indian sacred collection of  Vedic Sanskrit hymns composed in the north-western region of India, roughly between 1800-1100 BC.   In part it reads:  There is an endless net of threads throughout the Universe.  The horizontal threads are in space.  The vertical threads are in time.  At every crossing of the threads, there is an individual.  And every individual is a crystal bead.  And every crystal bead reflects not the light from every other crystal in the net, but also every other reflection throughout the entire Universe. (Source: Frank Joseph from his book Synchronicity and You)

The second part of the answer can be found in various practices such as:

Commune with Nature and consciously witness the intelligence within every living thing
Meditation:  Meditation is a pillar that connects you to Source
Participation in sweat-lodge ceremonies, vision-quests, other cultural rituals

Yoga or other forms of physical movement which offer the option of serene, repetitive rhythm
For example: Dance, swimming, walking, stretching, skiing, paddle-boarding, kayaking, rowing

Listening to music, chanting, singing, participating in drum-circles
Talking to Self and Source through quiet thought and contemplation
Practice “non-judgment” and “letting go”
Focus on Gratitude – creating lists of all you acknowledge to be grateful for and appreciate
“Simply Be Love” – Evelyn Apostolou

The Sky’s the Limit here.  Create your own unique practice of getting in touch with the deepest parts of your Soul-Spirit-Being.  How do you feel when you sit and watch a sunset, or listen to the waves of the ocean crash against the shore or smell the beautiful scent of flowers?  Pure Potentiality is the essence of these experiences and feelings.  When you remember you are unlimited and your fundamental nature is Love, then fear diminishes.  The key is to remind yourself, constantly, that you are a Soul-Spirit-Being of Pure Potentiality.

When you are in alignment with Pure Potentiality you will feel what it means to be truly free.
